Please Call Ahead For Doctors Hours
As many of you know, my father Dr. Mamdouh H. Abou-Youssef was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. His battle was long and difficult; yet, he managed to come back from difficult odds. His goal quite simply was to ensure that his family would be okay when he would eventually and inevitably shuffle off his mortal coil. A goal he achieved admirably. On February 27th in the afternoon, dad passed quietly and peacefully with his family by his side. Friday is the holy day of the week for Muslims, which seems so very appropriate for him. According to Muslim tradition, his body will be washed, prayed over, and buried within 24 hours. It will be a small, private funeral. We plan on holding a memorial for him, which you are all invited to attend. Details will be forthcoming. We will be closed for the next few days to allow time for myself and staff to grieve. When we return, I ask personally that my dad not be mentioned. Whether selfish or not, I must admit that I do not have the emotional fortitude to discuss my father or his death while still somehow managing to perform my duties as a veterinarian. I can do one or the other: not both.To close, I leave you with this excerpt from the poem “The Prophet: Death” by the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran:Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.Sincerely,Dr. Adam M. Abou-Youssef
